It is so good to be back in beautiful Austin, Texas! Today it was 85 degrees and I moved all my stuff into my new place. It started to get dark around 5:30pm and I was briefly alarmed. And then I remember it's almost December. Go figure!
While I unpack my few-but-too-many belongings, I am also preparing for the Crooked Crow Songwriter Retreat. How does one prepare to write songs, you may ask. I have been looking through favorite books and "scraps" I take down throughout the day on my iphone, and writing them into one book. J Wagner, the founder of the retreat and my songwriting guru, says "NO COMPUTERS" at the retreat. . . so I am doing my best to comply despite the additional effort. It's worth it.
I went to Crooked Crow last year. While passing through Boulder on my journey to Austin, I spoke with Gregory Alan Isakov and he connected me to his songwriting buddy, J Wagner. When I got to Austin I found J on Facebook and sent him a message. He quickly responded, we got coffee at Bouldin, nerded out about songs, and he invited me to drive 10 hours into the desert to an off the grid hot springs on the border of Mexico for a songwriter retreat one week later. I said yes, and I lived to tell the tale. The retreat was amazing, and it jump-started my year of learning how to write badass songs.
I'm so thankful for Crooked Crow, and excited to attend this year. I'll be carpooling out there with my badass songwriter gal pals Shawnee Kilgore and Lizzy Lehman. We're spending one night in Marfa on the way there and another night in the "ghost town" Terlingua where we get to play in a songwriter showcase at the Starlight Theater.
And then I'll be back in Austin to work on my album. . . with really awesome people. . . more on this soon.
In the meantime, adventure ahoy!
