Shawnee Kilgore and I have returned from our West Coast tour with a passel of photographs to sort, new albums to process, and song sprouts to explore. We're thankful for all the friends new and old who came to our shows, and hooked us up with awesome gigs and fabulous accommodations. We felt real fancy.
While in Los Angeles we attended the TAXI Road Rally, which is the annual conference for the leading independent A&R company. I was so inspired to be a room full of songwriters attending workshops featuring some of the most talented and prolific songwriters in our modern age. I played the "open mic" showcases and got a great response from the TAXI crowd. Now I'm even more excited to work on my first ever EP recording! (more on this another day)
The day after TAXI, Shawnee and I treated ourselves to a daylong workshop with vocal and performance coach Steven Memel. He broke us down and put us back together. He saw through our games and called us on it. He made Shawnee scream obscenities and me sing whisper-soft. Lives were changed, negative patterns estranged, good thoughts re-arranged.
I feel myself stepping into my strength while on stage, rather than continuing to think and play small and hide behind a comedic persona. I'm grateful for change.
